Sports & Activities
The mission of Special Olympics Texas is to provide year round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports.
Bowling season runs from September through early November. Practices are one hour once a week culminating in the one day Area competition. Ramps are available allowing all ability levels to participate.
Basketball season starts in November and runs through February. The Coppell team typically fields two basketball teams divided by age into a middle school/high school/post high school team and an elementary aged team. An individual skills team may be offered that provides competition in dribbling, passing, and shooting. The teams practice one hour once a week culminating in a one day classification competition and the one-two day Area competition. The teams may participate in one or two practice tournaments prior to the Area competition.
Our Coppell team offers cheerleading as an additional activity. It is not an officially recognized Special Olympics sport at this time and is solely a spirit team and not a competitive team. The cheerleading season coincides with our basketball and volleyball seasons. The squad trains one hour once per week at the same location and time as the basketball and volleyball practices. The squad cheers at the basketball and volleyball classifications and the area competitions.
Soccer season runs from March through May. The Coppell team currently offers a middle school/high school/post high school team that practices one hour once a week culminating in a one day classification competition and the one day Area competition. A younger team may be offered if there is enough interest and if there is a coach. An individual skills team may be offered for athletes who may need a more individualized approach.
Athletes participating in soccer would not be able to compete in Track and Field due to Area competition scheduling conflicts.
Track and Field
Track and field season starts in March and runs through May. Events include tennis ball throw, softball throw, 50-yard dash, 100-yard dash, wheelchair obstacle courses, wheelchair races, relay races, and more. Practices are one hour once a week. The Coppell team competes in two local competitions before the Area competition.
Athletes participating in Track and Field would not be able to compete in Soccer due to Area competition scheduling conflicts.
The swimming season runs from June through August. Practices are approximately 30 minutes once a week at the Coppell Family YMCA. Athletes of all ability levels compete in a variety of events. The Coppell team usually competes in two local meets and the one-two day area meet in August. For the past few years the Coppell team has taken athletes to the state competitions in October.
Bocce season starts in August and ends in September. Practices are approximately one hour once a week culminating in a one day classification and a one day area competition.
Volleyball is the newest sport offered by Coppell. Volleyball season runs September through November. Practices are approximately one hour once a week culminating in a one day classification and a one day area competition.
