Sports & Activities

The mission of Special Olympics Texas is to provide year round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports.

Bowling runs from September through early November, with one-hour weekly practices leading up to a one-day Area competition. Adaptive equipment, including ramps, is available to ensure athletes of all ability levels can participate and enjoy the season.

BOWLING

BASKETBALL

Basketball season begins in January and runs through February. The Coppell program currently offers teams for athletes from middle school through adulthood, with weekly 45-minute practices.

An Individual Skills team may also be offered, focusing on the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, and shooting for athletes who are still developing competitive play skills.

Teams practice once a week for 45 minutes, with the season culminating in a one- to two-day Area competition. Teams may also participate in one or two practice tournaments leading up to the competition.

SOCCER

Soccer season runs from March through May. The Coppell program currently offers teams for athletes from middle school through adulthood, with weekly 45-minute practices.

The season concludes with a one-day Area competition and a special Unified game played alongside the Coppell High School girls soccer team at the CHS stadium.

An Individual Skills team may also be offered, focusing on the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, and shooting for athletes who are still developing competitive play skills.

SWIMMING

Swimming season runs from June through July, with weekly 30-minute practices held at the Coppell Family YMCA.

Athletes compete in a variety of events based on their skill level. The Coppell team typically participates in two local meets and a one- to two-day Area competition in July.

Athletes who compete in the Area competition are eligible to advance to the State Competition, held in early October.

Bocce season runs from August through September, with weekly 45 minute practices. The season concludes with a one-day Area competition.

Bocce is a sport similar to lawn bowling, where athletes take turns rolling balls toward a smaller target ball called the pallino. It promotes strategy, coordination, and teamwork, and can be played individually or in teams, making it accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of athletes.

TRACK & FIELD

Track and Field season runs from April through May and is currently offered only to school-aged athletes through their schools.

Athletes practice as part of their PE classes and participate in a variety of events, such as the tennis ball throw, softball throw, 50-yard dash, 100-yard dash, relay races, wheelchair races, and wheelchair obstacle courses.

The Coppell team typically competes in one or two local competitions.
